Charity Fundraising Events

	WE DID IT!........ ABBEY staff set out this year to raise £25,000 for charity and good causes to celebrate 25 years in business. Passing our target in December, we would like to thank all the generous local people and businesses who helped make this happen. You can be assured that every penny raised will be put to good use by many appreciative good causes. With almost twenty fundraising events this year, we plan to take things a little easier next year but still remain committed to supporting the community that supports us.

	Pancake Race Organised by Reading Borough Council, a rather damp team from Abbey Windows took part in this year's Reading Pancake Race only to lose out in the first heat. The good news however was that £1000 was raised for the Sue Ryder Charity by the event

	Caversham Heath Golf Day, 13th April 2010 Abbey Windows hosted a Golf Day in aid of The British Heart Foundation at Caversham Heath followed by a meal provided by Picasso restaurant in Caversham. 32 keen golfers supported the day, raising £655

	Karting Gran Prix at Teamworks Karting Friday 14th May 2010 30 drivers joined Abbey at Teamworks Karting for a hard fought evening of racing, eventually won by Tim Braillie of Michael King & Co. Supported by Himalayan Hotspot, Green Parlour Florists & P&L Autos £700 was raised for local community groups on the evening.


Molly Denton 5th June 2010 Tilehurst based Molly and Alan Denton took up yet another challenge to their years of charity fundraising supporting Abbey Windows 25 Grand Years. Joined by 85 dancers at Tilehurst British Legion, Molly & Alan raised £1000 for Help for Heroes with an Anniversary Dance. Molly commented that she was overjoyed by the support they received from some thirty local businesses helping make the evening a great success all round.


Reading Half Marathon Andrew Young, Managing Director at Abbey Windows took part in this year’s Reading Half Marathon raising £1400 for the Stroke Association. Part of Abbey’s 25 Grand Years year of fundraising. Being the youngest person to run the first Half Marathon and after a break for 25 years before returning a supporting the Stroke Association after his father, Bernie Young suffered a stroke. With a respectable time of 2 hours 20 minutes Andrew certainly took advance of the after race care.

James Stuart Abbey Windows Installation Manager James Stuart ran his first Half Marathon raising £340 for H.E.A.R.T UK in an impressive time of 1:05:28. James said ‘It was a fantastic feeling to finish in a respectable time and raise money for a great cause. Thank you to all who sponsored me’

Sandford Springs Golf Day Organised by Adrian Kearsey and Nat West Bank, a staggering £1630 was raised for Cancer Research, with another £200 raised for the Swings and Smiles children’s charity. With some forty six golfers competing at Sandford Springs as part of Abbey Windows 25 Grand Years of fundraising, the weather held out for a fabulous day. Auction prizes included limited edition records and cd’s from The Gorrillas, Primal Scream and Deep Purple as well as Jack Nichlaus, Reading FC and Cricket memorabilia. Andy Young from Abbey Windows praised Adrian, Nat West and numerous local businesses supporting the event. Swings & Smiles A cheque for £200 for local Thames Valley charity, Swings & Smiles was presented by Andy Young of Abbey Windows to Sue Roberts, a Trustee for the charity. Swings & Smiles are fundraising to provide a comprehensive play facility for children with special needs and their families in West Berkshire. As part of Abbey Windows' celebration of 25 years in business, Andy was first introduced to Swings & Smiles by Reading FC's Graeme Murty, who has long supported the charity with his wife Karen, donating some £12,000 from his testimonial match to the fundraising. Abbey Windows have donated £200 toward this years hugely successful (and dry) 33rd Reading Community Carnival.

Snowdonia Mountain Marathon 26 miles over 24 hours, climbing 11,000ft and taking in numerous mountain peaks. Quite a challenge but Abbey have joined forces with Reading 107fm with a team raising funds for Robbie the Robot. We aim to raise £5000 to help the Royal Berkshire Hospital buy the machine which provides robotically assisted surgery, dramatically reducing surgery and recovery times. Training for the team has started and to raise our funds, we aim to take 100 Flags for Robbie to the top of Snowdon. Sponsor a flag (min £50 donation) and we will create and take your flag with us (and provide you with a picture). After just 3 weeks of fundraising our team already has pledges of £2200!... Update: Our team of 8 - Lou, Jo, Simon, Colin, Dave, Simon, Damien & Andy took part in the challenge of a lifetime on 4th & 5th September. If you’ve heard of the three peaks, we covered 15 peaks and 7 mountains, including the 4 highest in Wales, all in 24 hours and over a single course of 26 miles. Without a doubt, the most exiting and challenging event any of us had ever taken part in. 	Elvis Tribute Show Paul Rouse and the Vegas Divas performed their award winning Elvis Tribute Show at Tilehurst British Legion on Friday 19th June for Leukemia Research. One of Abbey Windows 25 Grand Years fundraising events Abbey boss, Andy Young was only too pleased to hand over the £2000 raised as Paul himself has supported and raised over £150,000 for Leukemia Research

Swallowfield Car Boot Sale Sunday 11 th July Reading 107fm's Snowdonia Mountain Marathon team members Colin, Dave, Simon and Andy raised £455 towards the Robbie the Robot Appeal. With special thanks to the organisers and the many stallholders show generously donated to the Appeal. In addition, £15 was donated to RNLI through the Bell at Grazeley.

	£275 Raised by donations from customers throughout the year (usually cutting their own glass down to size). Plus parking for Reading Festival over the Bank Holiday weekend. Dystonia is a neurological condition of uncontrolled body movements, with several forms from writers cramp (hands) to the whole body. Andy's wife Mandy suffers and they are both keen supporters of the charity.

Deveres Wokefield Park - Golf day Tuesday 14th September at Deveres Wokefield Park, 40 Golfers managed to dodged the rain until the last team reached the 18th Hole. £1155 was raised for The Royal British Legion. A British Legion club member himself, Andrew Young presented the Competition Winner Award to John Roche who had an amazing round of golf, winning with 40 points.

Thameside walk with the Nat West team Andrew joined Nat West Bank on 8th October for a Thames side walk from the Henley on Thames to Reading Market Place branches of the bank. We were blessed with good weather, managing to complete the sponsored walk in 4 hours, raising £1500 for RELATE and another £880 for other local charities.

Abbey were proud to be of some support in providing a game station for The Duchess of Kent House Hospice in Reading.

Toy Run! Whilst concerns over safety stopped us using our little van, local bikers came to our rescue carrying £150 worth of presents Abbey customers had donated to Barnados. With over 3000 bikers taking part (some making a journey of over 100 miles), a turn in the weather allowed the sun to shine on this, the 25th annual Toy Run. Organised by Reading Christian Bikers, this event from Shire Hall to Wokingham is now one of the largest in England. www.readingtoyrun.org www.readingtoyrun.org

Cheryl from P & L Autos held her annual ‘bake a cake’, baking cakes to order for local businesses. Staff were then encouraged to make donations for Children in Need, with Abbey staff raising £28 from a rather tasty Chocolate cake. Diet starts after Christmas!

Santa Jog! Ann and Andy were joined by family and friends at the Santa Jog in Prospect Park in aid of the British Heart Foundation. With everyone walking or jogging up to 6 km, over £600 was raised (mainly due to the fabulous efforts of Ann and her family). The sight of several hundred Santas is a regular occurrence now throughout the UK for The BHF but never fails to bring a festive smile to anyone who catch them in action.
